Wreckage of American Submarine and Bomber Discovered 400 Meters Beneath California Waters

The wreck of an American submarine discovered near San Diego

The sailors are filled with surprises. In addition to the many aquatic species that still remain to be discovered, it happens that wrecks dating back several decades, even centuries, are found by divers.

The wreck of an American aircraft carrier, on which a Ford of the 1940s appeared, discovered in Honolulu, researchers have just discovered another vehicle belonging to the American army: a submarine. Located a few kilometers from San Diego, the wreckage found was identified as that of the USS F-1.

A ship more than 100 years old

It was discovered by researchers from the Hole Oceanographic Woods Institution (WHOI) and the US Navy, thanks to operators aboard the Alvin (HOV) and the autonomous submarine vehicle (VSA) Sentry, since the wreckage was more than 400 meters deep, too important a distance for divers. According to LiveSciencethe USS F-1 submarine sank in a few seconds following a collision with another US Navy submarine, causing the loss of nineteen members of its crew.

“The USS F-1 carried out a technical test and 48-hour performance tests from San Pedro and San Diego, California, when the accident occurred”, said Bradley Krueger, underwater archaeologist of the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) of the American Navy. According to the specialist, the sinking would have taken place during the First World War in 1917, more than 100 years ago.

A American navy training plane also found

During this expedition, the researchers also found the wreckage of another vehicle from the American navy, but this time of a torpedo bomber, the Grumman TBF Avenger.

Used during the Second World War, the wreckage of 16.51 meters, a length of 12.19 meters and a height of 4.70 meters, belonged to a training bomber, whose crew on board managed to escape before the plane flows according to Bruce Strickrott, head of the Alvin group in Whoi. He also explains that the wreck of the Grumman TBF Avenger was known by his organization for years, but that his location was still unknown.
