Wikipedia Embraces Artificial Intelligence While Keeping Human Contributors Intact

WikiMédia, the foundation that manages the Wikipedia online encyclopedia, made a major ad. At a time when generative artificial intelligence is essential in many sectors, Wikipedia will also adopt it.

Artificial intelligence will support human contributors from Wikipedia

“For almost 25 years, Wikipedia publishers have conducted research, deliberate, discussed, forged consensus and written in collaboration the largest encyclopedia ever seen by humanity. Their concern and their commitment to reliable encyclopedic knowledge are unequal, ”said the foundation in a press release.

Even if human contributors are unequal to guarantee the reliability of the online encyclopedia, Wikimedia will not ignore the opportunities offered by the generative AI.

The AI will therefore be used for technical purposes. It will allow human contributors to focus only on research and writing, instead of wasting time on technical tasks which are generally repetitive, even painful to accomplish.

Technical tasks will be entrusted to the generative AI, says WikiMédia

WikiMédia has given some examples of these technical tasks which will soon be carried out by generative artificial intelligence:

  • Detecting errors, monitoring changes, preventing vandalism (such as the malicious modification of articles);
  • Make information more easily identifiable to free up time to contributors. The latter will thus be able to focus on reflection, deliberation and decision -making;
  • Automate the translation and adaptation of content and articles in different languages;
  • Support new human volunteers via guided mentorship.

Artificial intelligence will therefore not be responsible for writing Wikipedia articles. There is then no risk that it invents facts or amplifies information in an exaggerated manner.

A clear and transparent commitment in favor of a human contribution

Direct production of content remains in the hands of human contributors. “We will adopt a human -centered approach and give priority to human action,” reassures the Wikimedia Foundation.

This transparent approach and centered on humans is all the more important since the Internet ecosystem is increasingly “polluted by poor quality content, mesinformation and disinformation”.

Readers will therefore always have the guarantee that Wikipedia articles are written by human contributors from verified sources.
