What is the Liaoning, the Chinese Aircraft Carrier Increasing Tensions in the South China Sea?

On October 23, 2024, a week after China increased its pressure on Taiwan as part of a full-scale military exercise which consisted of encircling the island, a Chinese building was seen not far from Taiwan. Indeed, the Taiwanese forces spotted the Liaoninga special aircraft carrier in China's military history.

The very first Chinese aircraft carrier

Although it is known today as Liaoningin reference to the Chinese province where it was renovated. Not built, renovated.

Indeed, the building today under the Chinese flag previously sailed under the Ukrainian flag and was known under the name of Varyag. Bought by China in 1998, it officially entered service in September 2012. Since then it has been joined by two other aircraft carriers: the Shanghai and the Fujian.

The latter is also the only one to have been entirely built in China. In March 2024, shortly before the first sea trials of the Fujianthe Middle Kingdom also announced that work was underway to build the fourth aircraft carrier for its navy.

A device at the heart of tensions

With its 304.5 meters in length, the aircraft carrier Liaoning does not go unnoticed. Even less so in the eyes of the Taiwanese authorities who easily understand that the escalation is surely underway.

Indeed, the threats of invasion of Taiwan by China are becoming increasingly felt and the presence of Liaoning in the Taiwan Strait is not intended to reduce the threat. 377 km long and 180 km wide, it is the only natural border that separates China from the island.

The fact that it is there is not insignificant and echoes the recent live ammunition exercises which took place near the island a few days ago. As well as an American presence which aimed in particular to reduce tensions.

THE Liaoning is a significant striking force

Despite his great age, the Liaoning remains an important vessel in the Chinese navy. Being a pioneer, it also impresses at sea. 304.5 meters long, and able to accommodate nearly 2,500 crew members (air group included), it travels at sea at a speed of 32 knots, or 59 km/h .

And to be able to be a significant strike force, it can accommodate around forty planes and helicopters on board for easy intervention.
