Yonge Street, located in Toronto, is the longest street in the world with a length measuring 57 km.
A “walk” down this street will take you exactly 14 hours, but only if you don’t take a break. It offers beautiful settings such as the lakefront located in the city center, old Toronto and its St Lawrence covered market, qualified as the best market in the world in 2012 by National Geographic.
28 times larger than the Champs-Élysées…
Yonge Street was opened in 1794. It was first designed by Canadian Governor John Graves Simcoe as a military road. This aimed to protect Upper Canada from an American invasion.
Then, it continued to grow in the years that followed, ending up with the length it has today since 1796. For comparison, the most famous street in France, the Champs-Élysées , measures “only” 2 km in length, or 28 times smaller than “Yonge Street”.
…and double the second largest street in the world
It was officially entered into the Guinness Book of World Records, but with an error regarding its length. Indeed, until 1999, Yonge Street held the world record for the longest street in the world with a length of 1896 km. This distance, as impressive as it is improbable, was in reality that of Yonge Street and Route 11 which were merged.
Behind Canadian Street, you have to go to the Mexican side to find the second largest street in the world. In the capital Mexico City, “Avenida de los Insurgentes” is 28.8 km long and was named in honor of the country's independence fighters. Broadway, in the United States, completes the podium measuring 21 km.
