The appearance of the Nutri scores on the box and plastic packaging of the majority of products in supermarkets was perceived as a real revolution on the consumer side. The goal is to orient purchases towards a consumption of more balanced products.
Companies now have two years to update their packaging. This new rating will allow in particular:
- improve visibility according to the salt content and sugars of a product
- It will also be more severe with regard to processed products.
A disagreement within the government
Make sure that the French eat more balanced, yes…. But not to the detriment of the French agrifood sector and local products. It is also a promise from the government. “” “[Nous serons] Attentive to what this system (…) does not harm products from the richness of our terroirs and symbols of our culinary heritage ”.
Indeed, Annie Genevard, Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, deplores the bad grades given to cheeses and cold meats, “remarkable” products from the terroir. Seeing “D” or “e” affixed would constitute a blocking point for the purchase of these products according to her. The Minister had also publicly declared that she wanted to block the publication of the decree which would allow her entry into force.
An evolution of the algorithm to follow a proposal from the European Scientific Committee
Established for the first time in 2017 and designed by nutrition specialists, the principle is to classify products according to their nutrient content and food to promote (fibers, proteins, fruits, vegetables, dried vegetables) and nutrients to limit (energy, saturated fatty acids, sugars, salt and sweeteners for drinks), such as the Precise Public France.
The final score obtained by a product allows you to notation. The latter is based on a five -color scale, ranging from dark green (a) to red. However, following many criticisms, a new algorithm is currently being implemented, to follow a proposal from the European Scientific Committee of the Nutri-Score dating from 2023.
