Unusual Event Disturbs the Glaciers of Western Antarctica

Under the icy and impenetrable veil of Western Antarctica, invisible forces in silence the fate of polar caps. In recent years, the glaciers of Western Antarctic have revealed a dynamic that is both unexpected and disturbing. The ice masses move faster than before. In addition, they exchange huge volumes of ice with neighboring glaciers. This phenomenon strongly destabilizes the balance of this ice region. This silent transformation, now detectable thanks to satellite observations, questions scientists about the long -term stability of one of the largest freshwater reservoirs on the planet.

Western Antarctica sometimes hide surprising behaviors. For the first time, researchers observed a phenomenon called Ice Piracy, literally “ice flight”. Thanks to satellite data from the Cryosat mission of the European Space Agency and those of American, European and Japanese satellites, a team led by the University of Leeds highlighted this amazing process. In less than 18 years, the Kohler East glacier began to divert the ice from his neighbor, Kohler West.

This transfer had never been documented over such a short period. Traditionally, scientists thought that ice flows were evolving over centuries, even millennia. For the first time, scientists observed such a rapid diversion of ice flows. The study, published in May 2025 in The Cryosphere, was led by researcher Heather Selley. This review is part of the European Geosciences Union.

The phenomenon is explained by the difference in thinning between glaciers. Kohler East was thinned and accelerated, while Kohler West has slowed down and thickened. This disparity caused a modification of the slope gradient which redirected part of the flow to Kohler East. The result is striking. Kohler East literally absorbs part of her neighbor's mass of ice, a situation that the researcher assimilates to a “glacial looting”.


Silent alert: Western antarctic glaciers accelerate their melting

Beyond the spectacular case of the Kohler glacier, the situation is more general and disturbing. The glaciers of Western Antarctica clearly accelerate their progress. The University of Leeds conducted a study with the British Antarctic Survey. The UK Center for Polar Observation and Modeling has also contributed. Together, they followed eight major glaciers near Pope, Smith and Kohler.

Data cover the period from 2005 to 2022. Seven glaciers saw their speed increase, sometimes by 87%. This is the case with the Smith West Glacier. On average, these glaciers increased by more than 700 meters per year. This is equivalent to the length of seven football fields.

On the other hand, Kohler West saw his speed decrease by 10%, a direct consequence of the redirection of his flow. This slowdown remains an exception. Elsewhere, the underwater melting of glacial platforms like those of Dotson and Crosson amplified the loss of mass. The Ice Shelf Crosson, for example, saw its forehead back up almost 60 km between 2005 and 2022, accentuating the detachment of the glaciers which fueled it.

Ice Piracy's phenomenon is thus an indicator of a rapidly changing glacial dynamic, according to Pierre Dutrieux of the British Antarctic Survey, co-author of the study.

Towards an uncertain future: what do these changes tell us about the rise of the oceans?

These observations reveal an increasing imbalance between the ice masses and the southern ocean. According to the European space agency, the decline in anchor lines, where glaciers pass from firm land to sea, is a major sign of instability of glacial caps.

For a decade, the overall level of the oceans has increased by more than 10 cm. The projections evoke up to 410 million people threatened by the rise in waters by 2100. The unexpected speed and redistribution of the ice flows documented in Western Antarctic still complicate forecasts.

The researcher Anna HOGG, of the University of Leeds, believes that “better understanding the internal dynamics of glaciers is essential to anticipate the risks of waters and adapting our climatic policies”, cited by Phys.org. The behavior of glaciers in this region could indeed serve as a barometer for other polar caps faced with accelerated warming.

The phenomenon of Ice Piracy, as spectacular as it is, is probably not isolated. Other Antarctica sectors may in turn know about flow redistributions, with consequences that are still difficult to estimate for the overall stability of the caps and the level of the oceans.
