Stellantis, one of the largest car manufacturers in the world, has made a surprising decision. While the automotive industry accelerates the development of electric vehicles, Stellantis prefers to relaunch the production of diesel engines and therefore brake electrification.
Diesel at the heart of the new Stellantis strategy
This strategic turn is explained by an uncertain market. As Les Echos explain, the group's electric cars did not have the expected success. Stellantis therefore decided to maintain its diesel production, but also to strengthen it.
It is thus extended until 2030 at the Trémery in Moselle factory. It is all the more unexpected that the Trémery factory was to stop the production of diesel engines this year.
The Stellantis specifications: light hybridization and Euro 7 standard
In addition to its diesel strategy, Stellantis will also develop its hybrid engines. This technology offers a transitional solution by reducing CO2 emissions while providing consumers an alternative to 100% electric cars.
The Italian Termoli factory will be responsible for the development of EDCT speed boxes. These are intended for light hybridization vehicles. Unlike conventional hybrids, these vehicles cannot drive alone in electric mode.
The group must also ensure that the environmental regulations are complied with if it wants to revive its diesel engines. The CO2 emissions limits are very strict in the European Union, new partnerships could therefore soon see the light of day. Let us not forget that Stellantis has already bought CO2 credits from Tesla.
In addition, the Euro 7 standard will be applicable from the end of 2026. It will strengthen the requirements on reducing exhaust gas emissions. The group diesel engines must therefore be updated to comply with the Euro 7 standard.
The sales objectives of electric vehicles have been revised downwards for this year
These are not the only Stellantis projects for the coming years. The group also aims to integrate a light utility engine in its passenger cars. Another project is to design a new, more compact diesel engine to conquer specific market segments.
Stellantis' new strategy adapts to the reality of electric vehicle sales. While the group had planned 50% sales of electric vehicles, it only considers that a target of 20% for this year.
It's a blow for the group. Not to mention the unexpected departure of ex-CEO Carlos Tavares in December 2024. The interim of the automotive group was provided by John Elkann.
From rapid electrification to strengthening diesel: an unexpected turn
The change of CAP of Stellantis is a major decision. The group had initially bet on rapid electrification of its range, but it finally reconsidered its position on diesel while developing its hybrid solutions.
It is also important to specify that the supply of Stellantis in terms of electric platforms is still limited. It mainly uses the E-CMP platform (and its improved E-CMP2 version), from PSA. It is found on compact models such as the Opel Corsa Electric, the Jeep Avenger, the Peugeot E-208 and the E-2008.
