The OS was presented to the public by the Denver Museum of Nature & Science on June 21, during an exhibition entitled “Discovering Teen Rex”.

A “teen” rex discovered by three young boys

This month of July 2022 will undoubtedly remain a memorable date for the two brothers. Liam and Jesin Fisher, accompanied by Kaiden Madsen their cousin and Sam, the father of the two Fisher brothers, both fell on a bone of Tyrannosaurus Rex which was out of the ground during a walk in the Badlands of the North Dakota (United States), as reported by the Guardian.

Respectively aged seven, ten and nine, the three boys walked a “property belonging to the American land management office around Marmarth”, A village of a hundred inhabitants. The region is best known by paleontologists, since many triceratops and T-Rex fossils were found there.

A bone of 67 million years old

It is precisely in the formation of Hell Creek (rocky formation dating from the Upper Cretaceous, particularly studied because of its numerous fossils discovered) that the dinosaur bone was discovered. It would probably have been buried 67 million years ago.

“” “You never know what we are going to discover there […] You see all kinds of rocks, plants and wild animals.“commented Sam Fisher to the Associated Press, a great enthusiast of this type of hike.

It was Liam Fisher who, the first, noticed this piece of bone exceeding rock, too small to be identified. His father then shares a snapshot of the discovery. Tyler Lyson, associate conservative in paleontology of vertebrates who works in the museum, first identifies the bone as having belonged to a relatively common duck (Hadrosaur) dinosaur.

An excavation, an exhibition and a documentary

The following year, an excavation was carried out with this bone, in which the three boys were able to participate. And the results were unexpected to say the least. “” “Instead of finding a cervical vertebra, we found the lower jaw with several teeth which exceeded”Explained Tyler Lyson.

According to the experts, these bones were those of a dinosaur who died between 13 and 15 years (hence the nickname Teen Rex) and weighed approximately 1587.57 kg, according to the information of Associated Press.

The discovery was immortalized by a team of documentaries from Giant Screen Films. The first in the film will be available on June 21, at the same time as the opening of the exhibition dedicated to the OS.

The documentary, soberly entitled T.Rex, is still broadcast at La Géode cinema in Paris located in the Cité des Sciences et Industrie.
