This Operator Can Disable Your Mailbox, But It’s for Your Protection

France, a country particularly affected by cyber attacks

4th country most affected in the world by cyber attacks in 2024 with 146.4 million accounts having undergone data leaks, according to the site 01netFrance is not spared. Whether in the banking sector, health establishments, or telephone operators, all were the target of hackers.

Free had been the victim of a cyber attack, where nearly 20 million customers had seen their data, including their IBAN banking identifier. To protect themselves as well as possible against these hacks, the French mobile operator has developed a surprising strategy.

Free deactivates a large number of mailboxes

It is possible that overnight, your free mailbox will be disabled. But don't panic, it comes from the operator who tries to protect you. Indeed, since October 2024, Free has started a preventive account deactivation campaign which seems compromised, according to the site Freenews.

The problem that leads these temporary suspensions is linked to VPN, a system that allows personal data to encrypt and hide the IP address, in order to guarantee protected and more secure internet navigation. Cybersecurity experts from the telephone operator have discovered that VPNs can transform customer connections into virtual twin from that of pirates, said Clubic.

What to do to recover access from your free mailbox?

“If you connect from a shared IP at the very moment when this IP is used by a pirate to tackle our subscribers, your connection is literally indistinguishable from pirate connections”, said Free in a statement. It is this confusion between the IP addresses of customers and hackers, which causes these account deactivations.

The operator also said that reactivation of accounts is done automatically within two hours. Once your account is activated, you just have to log into the Free site, and connect with your username and change your password. Disabling the VPN is also recommended by the telephone operator.
