Speckled with shards of turquoise mosaic and flanked by two mother-of-pearl eyes as well as seven conch shell teeth wisely arranged under an imposing nose, this mask, more than 600 years old, arouses astonishment, even a little hint of worry. According to a description published on the British Museum website, it perhaps represents Xiuhtecuhtli from Aztec mythology.
