This Glass of Water Doesn’t Prove the Chinese Space Station is a Hoax

Tiangong space station. But what should have gone unnoticed quickly becomes a hot topic on social networks. A glass of water placed on a table, straight, without overflow or floating drop, arouses an avalanche of suspicious comments.

On X, some influential users evoke a “grotesque staging”, unable to imagine such a docile liquid in a serious environment. Some Internet users suspect the glass of being a decor accessory used in a terrestrial studio. Influential accounts have largely relayed these accusations on Instagram, where they have accumulated tens of thousands of views, according to the Associated Press, which checked the authenticity of the images.

This is not the first time that an ordinary visual element has become the trigger for a conspiracy theory. But the simplicity of the phenomenon, combined with an ignorance of physical laws in weightlessness, has strengthened the virality of doubt. The glass has thus become, in a few days, proof brandished by skeptics to deny the very existence of the Tiangong station.

What modern physics tells us about the behavior of water in orbit

At first glance, the image may seem contradictory to what we imagine from life in orbit. In weightlessness, objects float, hair stands, and water turns into spherical bubbles. However, the presence of a static fluid in a glass is not incompatible with these laws. She even illustrates them to perfection.

Why the Chinese space station crystallizes as many suspicions

China is not the first country to be the subject of staging accusations around its space activities. The idea of ​​a rigged filming in terrestrial studio recalls the old lunar theories that aim for NASA. But in the case of Tiangong, suspicions take a very special geopolitical hue.

International agencies, including the United States, which are nevertheless direct competitors, do not dispute the veracity of the station, as Molly Silk, researcher at the University of Manchester and specialist in Chinese space points out. She also recalls that China has proposed to welcome astrongets from the UN member countries on board Tiangong, which would be unthinkable if the infrastructure did not exist.
