This Blood Type May Help Slow Down Aging, According to Science

From the first research carried out in Japan to the most advanced analyzes of modern biology, a track intrigues scientists who explore the mechanisms of aging. What if some bodies seemed to resist time better, not thanks to their lifestyle, but what flows in their veins? New studies relaunch interest in an unexpected link between blood group and aging, revealing biological clues that could well upset our age understanding.

Among 269 centenarians living in Tokyo, a significant proportion belonged to group B. This over -representation already suggested a possible correlation between this blood profile and a higher life expectancy.

More recently, researchers from the University of Stanford have resumed the thread of this hypothesis with much more advanced means of analysis. Thanks to the measurement of thousands of proteins in the blood, they were able to map the aging state of eleven major organs in more than 5,600 people. The results show that aging is not uniform in the human body, and that around one in five people presents one organ that ages prematurely.


What the latest research says about the link between blood group and aging

A study published in nature at the end of 2023, conducted by an international team, highlighted biological signatures specific to each organ. By crossing these data with blood profiles, the researchers discovered that some people escaped this accelerated aging, especially those belonging to group B. According to Doctissimo, around 20% of the population studied presented an accelerated aging of at least one organ. However, none of the group B participants appeared in this category.

This observation joins the observations of Stanford Medicine, who specifies that individuals who are in good health could already show signs of advanced wear in one or more organs. The link between blood and aging group is therefore not only based on life expectancy, but on measurable biological wear well before the first clinical symptoms.

Tracks to understand why some organizations are getting better than other

What distinguishes group B is still partly a mystery. Researchers evoke the presence of the B antigen on red blood cells, coupled with an ability to better manage certain metabolic stresses. This could promote more effective cell regeneration and slow down tissue degradation. A hypothesis reinforced by the more balanced levels of certain proteins in the blood, revealing of a lower biological age.

However, this blood factor does not explain everything. In France, only 7% of people are in group B. Health remains largely influenced by environmental and behavioral variables, such as physical activity, food, stress management, sleep, or even access to care.

This advance does not yet lead to immediate applications, but it opens the way to a more individualized medicine. By identifying the most exposed organs in each individual, one day one could anticipate the risks and adapt the treatments long before the disease settled. One more step towards a personalized reading of aging, which may not be registered as deeply in our genes as we thought.
