The New Paris Metro: Reviving an Obsolete Functionality with a Twist!

According to the Île-de-France Mobility siteif the MF19 will be available in 2025 on line 10, it will be necessary to wait until 2027 for line 13, 2029 for line 8 and even 2033 for line 7.

17.4 billion euros for the Ile -de -France network

Delays, work, traveler accidents … Metro problems, not a single Ile -de -France has escaped it, and they always arrive at the worst time and the worst place. Currently, it is line 6 that makes its own, preventing travelers from continuing their journey between the Motte Picquet Grenelle and the Charles de Gaulle stop.

If the metro lines give the impression that they are constantly under construction, it is because the RATP intends to modernize them ever more and thus streamline the movements of individuals and minimize delays.

This wish has a cost: since 2016, Île-de-France Mobilité has invested no less than 12.5 billion euros for trains and 4.9 billion euros for metros for the Ile-de-France network, according to a press release Alstom. The MF67, MF77 and MF88 trains that must be renewed, a collaboration between the Alstom and the RATP created the MF19, “new generation” equipment, 100% funded by Île-de-France Mobilités.

The assets of the MF19

“” “The year 2025 marks a key step for this project, with the reception of the first MF19 on line 10 at the start of the year to carry out tests”Explains the press release, specifying that the first commissioning will be made in autumn 2025. The objective is that in 2033, more than 50% of the metro lines are renewed.

These new trains include specific characteristics, presented on February 14, 2025 at the Bobigny workshop:

  • First refrigerated ventilation
  • A neat light atmosphere (with LEDs)
  • USB ports for loading devices
  • Configurations of the modular spaces according to the frequentation of the trains
  • Screens to facilitate the transmission of information of travelers
  • But also reinforced security thanks to video protection.

Finally, these future trains are made up of 20% recycled materials.

Already obsolete oars?

However, the MF19 calendar is clear, it will be necessary to wait until 2033 that all the lines were equipped. And by then, the equipment may become obsolete … Indeed, the ports will be of USB-A type while most of the phones sold are type C, condemning the USB-A to disappear.

Solicited by Numerama, Île-de-France Mobility said that it is the time between the train order and the delivery that explains the use of USB-A and that an update is unlikely …
