What if the future automobile champions were not the manufacturers themselves, but those from whom they obtain supplies to optimize their vehicles? This is a question that we can ask ourselves. With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence in the car, particularly with driver assistance devices, the manufacturer of Snapdragon chips, Qualcomm, is preparing to flood the automobile market.
The PC, the smartphone and the car
A triptych that will surely make Qualcomm happy in the years to come. World number 1 in the manufacturing of SoC (system on chip), electronic chips which condense most of the components of a computer or a smartphone, Qualcomm has the automotive market in its sights.
If in 2022, according to Frandroidthe American brand had already seen its technology Digital Chassis being implemented, in part, in 350 million vehicles across the planet, the brand aims much bigger.
Firstly, in terms of market share and therefore presence in the sector among manufacturers. Second, in terms of technology, to make the car of the future even smarter.
Two new chips
Technology Digital Chassis from Qualcomm is therefore already something known in the automotive sector and would tend to become more popular.
Until then, the automobile branch of the American company had focused on cloud and connectivity within the car.
Tomorrow, Qualcomm will position itself on driving and user comfort. Indeed, the manufacturer of Snapdragon chips found in Samsung smartphones, for example, will focus on the production of:
- Snapdragon Ride Elite – for control and support of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)
- Snapdragon Cockpit Elite – for controlling equipment inside the car
Thus, the first will work to integrate the different systems which allow, little by little, the driver to no longer have their hands on the steering wheel (but their eyes still on the road), while the second will make it possible to control the entire passenger compartment from a single chip. One technology to control them all.
It's not for tomorrow
If the promise of which Frandroid takes over has enough to represent a major advance in the field of automobiles and the accession, little by little, to a future where the car will be intelligent, it is not planned for immediately.
Indeed, today, Qualcomm has only announced its two chips. In other words, before they are fully integrated into vehicles, it would take several years before you see them arrive in your car.
But the car of the future is taking shape more and more, and surprisingly, it is not necessarily to the manufacturers that we have to turn to see it arrive.
