The French Navy Secures “Several Hundred” Acoustic Buoys: A New System for Anti-Submarine Warfare Control

This acquisition of buoys is made under the Sonoflash framework agreement.

Report of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, published on January 31, 2025, the Directorate General of Armament (DGA), would have ordered several hundred acoustic buoys active for the French Navy, as part of the anti-underwater control. This is the brand new generation in the matter.

This order is carried out in particular to fulfill two separate objectives:

  • Secure surface buildings
  • Secure nuclear machine launcher submarines (SNLE).

These new buoys will complete those of Anglo-Saxon design.

Two functions for a single buoy

As a report published by Thalès said on the same day, the buoy, called Sonoflash, is produced in France. It should be dropped from a maritime patrol plane (Type2 type) or a helicopter (type NH90), and makes it possible to detect submarines. Once airings, they unfold automatically.

They are also the only ones to have a function “active and passive”. Indeed, the Sonoflash buoy has a powerful transmitter as well as a receiver. Consequently, all surface ships and aircraft, but also acoustic support centers with an acoustic buoys processing system, will be able to receive the data recovered by the buoy.

“Resurgence of tensions at sea”

Sébastien Guérémy, vice-president of Thales underwater systems activities, said it was proud to contribute to the development of the French Anti-Sous-Marine Strength sector, and registers this participation in a context of “Resurgence of tensions at sea”. At the same time, the government displays its desire to “Strengthen national strategic and capacity ambition in the field of anti-submarine control”.

The government's report is full of praise for this new acquisition. “” ” [ce nouveau système] will provide clearly higher detection capacities“,”They also have an operating autonomy significantly higher than the buoys of previous generations ”…
