Chris Shelton and Kolby Dooling decided to keep the site of their secret find, to try to discover other fossils. The latter will serve as a work base for the development of a future scientific article, on semi-preciously discovered stone.
“” “Just before the spring holidays, I took one of my students, Kolby Dooling, on a site that I had already visited with other students, a place that had always been an interesting place to explore”Explains Chris Shelton to SCitechDaily. His pupil then brings him a very large iridescent piece which immediately attracts his attention.
An ammonite fossil, an extraordinary discovery
“” “It was clear that he had discovered something extraordinary with this ammonite fossil ”. Fascinated, Chris Shelton decides to study the fossil brought by his student. He realizes that it is a extremely rare part that produces a characteristic pearly iridescence. As the specialized media specifies, in Canada, this kind of fossils is classified as a precious stone called Ammolite.
As Chris Shelton specifies, it is a precious biological stone, “formed from fossilized shells of ancient cephalopods (molluscs related to modern calmars) ”. According to him, they are much sought after by collectors! For his part, his student does not hide his pride in having discovered such a piece.
A discovery soon recognized by the scientific community?
“” “I have never had as much chance of finding as many fossils as when I did my research with Dr. Shelton. I found some at home, but nothing comparable to this one. It really stung my curiosity ”, tells Kolby Dooling. This stone could be more than 300 million years old, date from the carboniferous period, before dinosaurs!
This discovery opens up great prospects for the student and his teacher. “” “We plan to carry out other shipments and new collections on the site in order to collect more samples. Then we will carry out many other analytical tests on fossils to confirm our hypothesis. Based on these results, Kolby and I write and submit an article evaluated by peers so that our discovery is recognized by the scientific community ”. Business to follow!
