Remarkable Gift: Anonymous Donor Contributes Iconic and Rare Gold Coin to Salvation Army

According to the Salvation Army spokesperson, the funds from this special gold coin will be donated to the local community.

A “Mapple Leaf” in a red pot

Obviously, Santa Claus is real. At least, members of the Salvation Army in Pennsylvania could legitimately believe it now, after finding in their donation bucket a coin unlike any other, left by a donor who wished to remain anonymous.

As a Salvation Army spokesperson explained to Fox News Digital, this piece would be worth a whopping $2,700. On the obverse side of the coin, there is a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. According to David Zanca, manager of a company specializing in rare coins, it is a Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin.

The purest gold coin in the world

According to the specialized site Gold Avenue, it is one of the most “popular gold coins in the world” recognized as a symbol of Canada, and also because it is one of the gold coins that contains “the most pure gold in the world with a guaranteed purity of 0.9999”. It was first issued in 1979, and the one discovered by the Salvation Army dates from 1987.

Canadian maple leaf gold coins are quite popular with investors as a way to purchase gold bullion”, explains David Zanca to Fox News Digital. “Assuming the person purchased the coin in 1987, they would have paid an average price that year of $520”.

2.7 million dollars per day

For David Zanca, this is a “tremendous” donation. “ One of the interesting aspects of gold coins is that they can be offered or given privately”. This donation took place as part of the Red Kettles Campaign, the Salvation Army's largest annual fundraising campaign.

Every year, members collect a huge amount of donations and this one was no exception: they collected no less than 2.7 million dollars per day during this holiday season. “ Nearly half of the donations the Salvation Army receives (including donations to the Red Kettles) are made from October to December”, explained the spokesperson. Indeed, there are more pedestrians, and therefore more individuals potentially inclined to donate.
