Remarkable Find: 2,000 Silver Coins from the Hundred Years’ War Discovered in Garden in 2022

[Article déjà publié le 12 avril 2024]

In fact, no less than 2000 silver coins dating from the 13th and 14th centuries were found in a garden in Deux-Sèvres.

A treasure placed under their noses

And to think that they were there from the beginning! It was while refreshing the garden that a couple made this incredible discovery. The pieces had obviously been dormant for some time, since they had been placed in a pottery, buried less than five centimeters in the ground!

A discovery which will not fail to enrage the former owner of the house, who himself began looking for the treasure in the 1980s, turning over the earth in his garden, carefully inspecting its walls in search of a fault (or a secret passage, who knows?) and even the cellar, which he had meticulously cleared… but without success.

When I'm not looking, I find!

In 2016, new owners purchased the land. In 2022, the treasure finally appeared to the couple, who were not looking to find the treasure but rather to renovate their current garden. And Picasso’s famous saying, although very pretentious, suits them perfectly: “When I'm not looking, I find!

So it had been there all this time, this famous treasure, buried in the garden, in the hollow of a pottery, wrapped in fabric, only five centimeters underground. These are no less than 2,000 silver coins dating from the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453).

For numismatists (currency experts)

The most recent date from the mid-1352s and are “big tournaments in Saint-Louis” where we can see a cross pattée surrounded by the king’s title. This currency would in fact have been minted by Saint-Louis from 1266, until his death in 1270, according to the Numista website. We also find feudal coins (from lordships) and even a penny which would come from an Irish workshop.

In addition, the law (and luck) is once again on the side of the owner couple. As the law stipulates, after this find was declared to the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs (DRAC), the entire treasure was granted to them, because they discovered it in addition to being the holders of the land .

Expertise work is underway to assess the real value of this currency.
