The 2000-5F mirages, French fighter planes recently sent by the French army in Ukraine, had allowed dozens of drones in the Red Sea a year ago.
These planes have already proven themselves in the past. In a post LinkedIn, Jérôme Bellanger, chief of the air force of the air force and space, to salute the combat teams present at the level of the Red Sea, namely the hunting squadron 3/ 11 Corsica, a French combat unit based in Djibouti.
As a reminder, the latter had destroyed during the aspid operation, carried out under the aegis of the European Union, several so-called “suicide bomber” drones at the red sea level, thanks to these Mirage 2000-5F. These drones had been launched from Yemen by the rebel group Houthis, as the site points out OPEX360.
A fighter plane put into service in the late 1990s
Commissioned in 1999, the Mirage 2000-5F is a more modern model than its predecessor. Hybrid, this fighter plane is for example equipped with five screens and a new Rdy radar (Doppler Y radar) which allows it to make simultaneous shots on several targets with the Mica missiles, which are smaller and more modern than The Magic 2, missiles used before. This machine is also equipped with two 30 mm guns and has a new Hotas (Hands on Thottle and Stick) control system, which facilitates the management of the combat system for the pilot.
The missions of these fighter planes are multiple as the protection of an area of interest, support for bombing mission or nuclear raid escort. The Ministry of the Armed Forces tells us that the French forces currently have around forty of this type of fighter aircraft.
France sends several Mirage 2000-5F to Ukraine
Several mirages 2000-5F have recently been sent to Ukraine, as announced by the Minister of the Armed Forces Sébastien Lecornu, on the platform X. The latter specifies in his post that these fighter planes will be piloted by “Ukrainian pilots trained for several months in France”, and that the mirages 2000-5F “Will now participate in defending the sky of Ukraine”.
As a reminder, this shipment confirms the commitment that Emmanuel Macron had made last June. The site here specifies that the models sent are slightly modified. Indeed, they are adapted to the Ukrainian situation, namely to program to take away and launch cruise missiles such as the SPIP-EG and the Storm-Shadow.
