Psoriasis is a non-contagious inflammatory skin disease which manifests itself by red patches covered with scales (skin flakes that detach from the epidermis) which develop mainly on areas of friction (elbows, knee, hands, etc.). It affects around 2% of people worldwide.
Among them, 20% have severe forms characterized by extensive skin lesions and/or the presence of other damage, particularly joint damage. The disease is caused by immune dysregulation. “But we don’t know exactly the causes. We also know that the appearance and/or severity of psoriasis is linked to different environmental factors such as tobacco consumption, alcohol or even food”, explains Laetitia Penso, pharmaco-epidemiologist at the University of Paris-Est Créteil (UPEC) within the EpiDermE (Epidemiology in Dermatology and Evaluation of therapeutics).
