Age-related macular degeneration (or AMD) is a disease of the retina that results in partial loss of vision. Treatment currently relies on regular intravitreal injections. However, concerns remain about complications related to these injections. In addition, their effectiveness is moderate. In this context, a team of Korean researchers has developed a new treatment, in the form of eye drops. Not only is this product much more pleasant for patients to administer, it is more effective.
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic disease from the central zone of the retina, called the macula. It is in this area, rich in photoreceptors (cones), which light rays converge. The center of the macula forms a small depression, called the fovea, where the concentration of cones is particularly high. It is this area that gives the eye its maximum acuity. Normally, the photosensitive part of the cones is constantly renewed by the retinal pigment epithelium. The “waste” resulting from this process is reused or disposed of.
With the aging, waste management becomes less efficient. They accumulate and form deposits. Over time, these deposits can cause deformation of the retina and therefore lead to visual distortions. In some individuals, natural immune mechanisms eliminate the deposits…Read more on Science and life
