FIFA Launches Competition Seeking AI Innovations to Enhance Its Technologies

FIFA announces “innovations” for its new competition

A new football competition is about to start: the club World Cup. Scheduled in the United States from June 14 to July 13, this new tournament is also an opportunity to test new technologies, still unpublished until then. Indeed, the International Football Association Federation (FIFA) announced “innovations” on Friday June 6.

When AI is at the service of football

“The system will follow the position of each player and the ball in order to automatically issue real-time alerts to the members of the arbitral body in the event of a blatant offside”, explained the football body on its site. Algorithms developed by Football Technology Center AG, automatically collect most of the live data from the available monitoring data, making decisions faster than before.

As indicated on their site, this is the first time that AI has been used in football. If the Club World Cup is, for the moment, an experiment, the success of this innovation will undoubtedly make it possible to call on artificial intelligence for other aspects of the game.

The other technological new features tested for the Club World Cup

FIFA has also announced the port of body cameras by the referees who will officer during this competition. These images, which will be broadcast live, aim to offer a different point of view from action (that of the referee), which could improve the experience of viewers.

For people present in the stadiums, a novelty will also be implemented. Indeed, they can now view, on giant screens, the images offered to the referee when verifying one or more disputed actions (the VAR), as can be seen in rugby for example and which allows to have a better understanding of the decision of the arbitrator.
