European Tree of the Year: A 300-Year-Old Polish Beech Takes the Crown in the Competition

Organized by the Environmental Partnership Association, the European tree competition of the year rewards the most remarkable trees in Europe each year. Today, 16 countries participate in the European competition after selecting their national tree.

Fourth consecutive victory for Poland with the “heart of the hills of Dalkowskie”

The results of the 2025 competition of the competition have just been announced. A Polish tree was elected best European tree for the fourth consecutive year. The “heart of the hills of Dalkowskie” is a 300 -year -old beech.

The hills of Dalkowskie are located in southwest Poland. It is a picturesque region renowned for the richness of its natural heritage. Several nature reserves and landscaping parks are there.

The 300 -year -old beech is precisely located in a historic park. It attracts visitors from all countries. Catholic concerts, masses and reading clubs were even organized there. More than 5,000 people also participated in horticulture or sylvotherapy workshops on site.

The overwhelming victory of the Polish tree against other European participants

The Polish beech is nicknamed “heart of the hills of Dalkowskie” for three reasons. The first is that he pushes the heart of the hills of Dalkowskie. The second is that its red leaves recall the color of a heart. The third and last reason is that this beech attracts crowds of visitors.

There is also a legend according to which this tree would be able to grant wishes. Thus, tourists are used to throwing peanuts in a beech hole hoping that their wishes are granted.

The “heart of the Dalkowskie hills” won the European tree competition of the year from afar. He actually received 147,553 votes while the tree in second place in the ranking received 43,427.

The “peaceful oak of Saint-Maurice” represented France this year

His name is “The Lovers Banyan Tree” and he is a 150 -year -old fig tree in Portugal. Then the third was granted to the “Pino de Juan Molinera”, a 400 -year -old parasol pine in Spain. 36,873 Internet users had voted for him.

One of the oldest trees in the competition, at least among those whose age is known, is the oak of Lukavice in the Czech Republic. Experts believe it is between 700 and 800 years old. However, this tree did not have an easy story.

Officials from the field where he is rooted actually tried to destroy it before the First World War. They had notably removed large amounts of earth around its roots to try to destroy it, in vain. Fortunately, oak is today a source of pride for the locals.

Finally, the tree chosen to represent France in the European competition this year is in thirteenth place in the ranking with 7,303 votes. Nicknamed “The peaceful oak of Saint-Maurice”, he is at the Saint-Maurice Abbey, in Clohars-Carnoët in Finistère. It is a pedunculated oak that is between 200 and 250 years old.
