Does Morning Coffee Actually Lower the Risk of Cardiovascular Disease?

For some people, morning rhymes with coffee. At the end of the bed, we heat the machine and revel in a hot drinking coffee to start the day off right. A habit practiced by thousands of people every day. And according to a study published on January 8, 2025 in the journal European Heart Journalthis habit would have beneficial effects on your heart. Finally, only if we respect certain conditions.

To do this, they based themselves on a study group made up of more than 40,000 individuals. Among them, 48% did not drink coffee, 16% drank it all day and 36% drank only in the morning.

Then, they had to determine the ideal quantity of coffee to benefit from such a reduction in the risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease and the observation is quite simple: a single cup of coffee is enough for the day.

But then why, drinking that in the morning would be more beneficial than drinking it all day?

It's quite simple and maybe you've already experienced it yourself: coffee keeps awake. In other words, if you drink it in the afternoon and evening, you take the risk of disturbing your day-free cycle and therefore, by extension, the quality and duration of your sleep.

This represents a significant risk for your heart.

A study that has limits

In general, you should not consume too much coffee if you want to be healthy. But related to the drop in the risk of mortality and caffeine taking is quite another thing.

This is what Abha Khandelwal, a professor in cardiovascular medicine in Stanford who commented on the study, put forward. “” “I don't think we can say that the time for caffeine consumption is an important factor in reducing the risk of mortality. There is no solid or rigorous scientific basis in this regard-at most there is a link with coffee consumption.”She explained to Healthline.

For the time being, other studies are to be carried out to possibly show a cause and effect link between drop in the risk of mortality and time of coffee consumption.

“” “At most, we can say that if you are a coffee drinker, consider limiting your consumption during morning hours, but this study is not designed or solid enough to talk about causality. I think you have to do much more, much more rigorously on the scientific level, to be able to make daring statements aimed at changing behavior”Concluded the professor.
