BYD Challenges Tesla with the Launch of the Sealion 7

On the upper floor of hall 5 just to the left of the entrance to the Parc des Expositions, it's bustling. If French manufacturers still enjoy a certain success, Chinese manufacturers are on the rise. And one brand in particular is attracting all eyes to it: BYD. Ironically or simply a game of competition, the Chinese brand was placed only one slot away from a major competitor: Tesla.

To impress, BYD has therefore decided to unveil an SUV sedan, the Sealion 7 which, unlike Tesla's Cybertruck also present on display, could one day be marketed in Europe.

Sealion 7 vs Model Y

Although many manufacturers are positioning themselves on the production and sale of electric cars, the market sees two behemoths sharing the cake: BYD and Tesla.

The two are quite simply the leaders in the field and if the American was there before everyone else, BYD is catching up and sometimes even overtakes Elon Musk's firm. On the occasion of the 2024 Paris Motor Show, BYD unveiled the Sealion 7, an SUV sedan, a crossover, which came to walk on the heels of Tesla's Model Y.

Tesla's SUV was quite simply the best-selling car model, all energies combined, in Europe in 2023. BYD therefore decided to take on a giant.

Available very soon

Presented since October 14, 2024 at the 2024 Paris Motor Show, BYD's Sealion 7 should be available for sale very soon according to several sources. In fact, it should go on sale by the end of October.

However, although the product is increasingly being revealed at the show as well as on the Chinese brand's website, no price has yet been communicated. There is a chance that the Sealion 7 could compete with Tesla's Model Y on price. Indeed, the American model sees its price start at €40,990.

Features of BYD's latest addition

With a name always evocative of the sea, Sealion meaning “sea lion”, BYD has so far revealed very little about the vehicle which will overshadow Tesla's Model Y. Indeed, even on its site, only three pieces of data stand out:

  • 23,000 rpm
  • Maximum speed of 215 km/h
  • Battery capacity: up to 91.3 kWh

In other words, it's not much for the moment. There is no doubt that this will expand over time and as the vehicle arrives on the market. However, questions remain. Will BYD's Sealion 7 be able to compete with Tesla's Model Y in terms of autonomy? The latter can notably go up to 600 kilometers in its version Long Range. Will the car come with options? If yes, which ones? What driver assistance technologies will be implemented in the vehicle system?

So, as long as BYD has not answered these questions, as well as many others that will arise as the show progresses, it is difficult to know whether or not the Sealion 7 will be capable to compete against the Model Y.
