Astronomical Events: Witness Planets Visible to the Naked Eye in January and February!

On January 21 and February 28, 2025, if weather conditions permit, you will be able to easily observe several planets with the naked eye. A perfect opportunity to try to take a family photo of the Solar System.

Four planets visible to the naked eye on January 21

On the evening of January 21, 2025, shortly after sunset, you will have the opportunity in an East – South-West panorama to observe, without a camera, Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn.

Two other planets, Uranus and Neptune can also be in the family photo if, and only if, you equip yourself with special equipment to capture this spectacular event.

Is this a planetary alignment?

Although the event is described as such everywhere, this will not really be the case. Indeed, the planets will not be, so to speak, aligned as one might imagine or as one can see when one looks at the results of internet searches with the query “Solar system planets”.

You will therefore not see an alignment of planets, one behind the other. On the other hand, on an almost straight line, you will be able to observe the different planets mentioned with the naked eye as if they were located on the same plane.

Other similar events planned for 2025?

We can still expect two planetary alignments for the year 2025. Indeed, according to information from StarWalkyou can now book:

  • February 28, 2025 when the seven planets of the Solar System can be observed in the evening
  • April 15, 2025 for a small alignment of Neptune, Mercury, Saturn and Venus
  • and August 11, 2025 for a grand alignment of Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Neptune and Saturn
