Are AI-Generated Memes Funnier Than Human-Made Ones?

The memes, the humor of today

Nowadays, the “memes” represent a large part of the things that make us laugh, especially on social networks. For those who do not know this term, a meme is an image or a video, most of the time parodic, which turns massively.

IA began to create his own memes, and the least we can say is that they are pretty good at this game, according to a German study.

Comparison between AI and Man

According to LiveSciencethe primary goal was not to know if AI was able to produce humorous content, but rather to explore the co-creativity that AI could offer in the writing of joke. To do this, researchers from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, the Munich LMU and the Darmstadt, have experienced. The latter recruited 124 participants, then divided them into two groups.

In the first, people were alone while in the other, each person worked in pairs with an AI chatbot assistant, which allowed them to think about ideas they then had to create legends for models of classic memes on the themes of work, food and sport. For its part, the OPENAI GPT-4O model has also produced this type of content. A group of a hundred people have judged the different memes, without knowing who had created them.

Work with a chatbot generates more ideas

The results of this experience have shown that the memes entirely created by AI have obtained better results than the other two groups. The researchers, however, said that “Among the most efficient memes, those created by humans were more humorous, while the collaborative memes between humans and IA were distinguished by their creativity and their ease of sharing.”

Humans therefore remain funnier than artificial intelligence. However, this study has shown that the alliance between man and a chatbot made it possible to generate more ideas. A tool that the comedians of tomorrow could use?
