The Beauval Zoo welcomes an albino tatou
Zoos are often the scene of exceptional and unexpected births. The latest occurred in the Beauval Zooparc. Located in Loir-et-Cher, the best known French park, especially due to the presence of rare species like the giant panda, announced the birth of an Albino taboo last May.
A very rare birth
This birth is the first of its kind identified in Europe, proof of its rarity. Originally from South and Central America, the tatous comprises several species, the best known of which are: the giant tatou, the nine -band tatou and the three -band tatou. Bola and Bolek, the couple of Tatou having given birth to an albino baby belong to the last species cited, Matacus Tolypeutes of his Latin name.
If the European program coordinator (EEP) said that this birth was the first case of albinism ever observed in this species, there are in reality two other similar cases in the United States, according to Rodolphe Delord. Regarding the other species, a group of four tatous with nine albino bands were documented on the island of Cozumel in Mexico in 2009, specifies the zoo.
A threatened species
As with many other species, three -band tatou is threatened by human activity, and classified vulnerable on the list of the International Union for Nature Conservation (IUCN), or even critical for specimens living in Brazil. Indeed, this species is the victim of poaching, and the destruction of its habitat.
The giant tatou is also classified as vulnerable, while the nine bands is considered to be a “minor concern”.
