An Asteroid Illuminates the Siberian Sky

A small asteroid has become the fourth impending impactor of 2024, that is, an asteroid discovered in the hours before its predicted impact. Identified C0WEPC5, the celestial body measuring approximately 70 centimeters wide was detected by astronomers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory (Arizona).

Its calculated trajectory determined that it would disintegrate in the atmosphere somewhere over Siberia. ESA, which closely follows this type of event, announced that this harmless asteroid “ will likely produce a beautiful fireball in the sky over northern Siberia “.

A spectacle in the Siberian sky

This was the case, as evidenced by images filmed by observers in the area.

This year, the first looming impactor was a one-meter asteroid (2024 BX1) that disintegrated in the sky above Berlin. The second (2024 RW1) burned up over the Philippines on September 4. The third asteroid (2024 UQ) was spotted two hours before entering the atmosphere on October 22 by the ATLAS (Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System) in Hawaii. It disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean.
