After 25 Years of Development, This Miniature Swedish House Model is Set to Journey to the Moon

“Moonhouse”, a Swedish project representing a model of a traditional Swedish house, is heading to the Moon, after 25 years of work.

“Moonhouse”, a Swedish project that lasts 25 years

It's a dream that (almost) comes true. After 25 years of work, Swedish artist Mikael Genberg sees his project “Moonhouse” on the verge of being finalized. As a reminder, this project is represented by the manufacture of a model of a typical Swedish house in red color. The goal is to bring this little house back to the Moon.

Well it’s now done. Indeed, at the start of the week, the RESILIENCE lander, designed by the Japanese company ispace, was successfully launched at the start of the week via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. In a statement, Takeshi Hakamada, founder and CEO of ispace, said that “The RESILIENCE lander is working as designed and, with the thrust of the propulsion system, is now heading toward a lunar flyby.”

The model will then be taken away by a rover

According to IFLSciencethe lander takes a longer but more fuel-efficient route, and should, if all goes well, land on the Moon's northern hemisphere in four and a half months. Once the landing is successful, the model of the house will be moved by a rover.

Named TENACIOUS, this lunar rover is also an ispace creation. Its mission will be to take the model, which was previously fixed above, to a lunar area which was chosen beforehand.

Moonhouse would become the second work of art on the Moon

A future consecration for all the people who worked on this project, particularly on the technical part of the model, like Emil Vinterhav, head of the Moonhouse technical team, who indicated in a press release that “Experienced engineers have worked on the technical design of the Moonhouse over the past two years to ensure that it can withstand all the stresses and challenges it will face during the journey to the Moon and survive intact in its new climate.

He also explained that several tests were carried out to simulate the landing of the house on the Moon, so that everything went as planned. Moonhouse will be the second art project to feature on the Moon. Indeed, during the Apollo 12 mission, at the end of the 1960s, six American artists, including Andy Warhol, designed the “Moon Museum”, a small ceramic plaque which contains six works, one per artist.
