A Mysterious Spiral Light Captivates Quebec During the Perseids—Not a Shooting Star!

A strange light object seen in Quebec's sky

Observable for a few weeks, the Perseids, one of the most famous shooting stars of the year, knew its peak on the night of August 12 to 13. It was at this point that a spiral-shaped luminous object appeared in Quebec's sky, causing the surprise of the people present.

Fuel drop in a rocket as an explanation

According to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, this spiral glow was probably caused by the desire for the European rocket Ariane 6 designed by the French company Arianespace. The latter had been launched a few minutes earlier at 9:37 p.m. from Kourou, in French Guiana, to place one of the brand new European weather satellites.

It was therefore when returning to earth that this rocket left behind a trail of fuel. In contact with air, the latter will then produce light, observed in Quebec but also in the north of the United States, especially because of its high temperature and the gases and chemical elements that compose it.
