In Scotland, if Loch Ness is known worldwide to shelter, it seems, “Nessie” an aquatic creature that makes you shudder and fantasize the followers of cryptozoology, the Loch Long, it does not enjoy such popularity. However, he begins to make himself known for what he becomes little by little: a discharge. And this is a major problem.
62,000 objects that run aground each year on the beach
Many inhabitants of Arrochar, in the northwest of Scotland, often go to the beaches of Loch Long. However, unlike his counterpart Ness, the people who come there are not there to admire the sight, although it is beautiful, or to rock stories and legends.
No, they very often come with the idea of ridding the beach of the waste that litter it. However, even if their efforts are important, they cannot overcome 62,000 waste quickly which run aground on the edge of the Loch Long.
As reported by Bbcmany of this plastic waste in particular comes largely from Glasgow, the largest city in the country. The latter travel through the waters of the Clyde, the river crossing the Scottish metropolis.
Loch Long is not the only one to be impacted
If the biodiversity of Loch Long is necessarily impacted by these mountains of waste, other indirect consequences are felt in particular with the inhabitants of Arrochar and the Argyll region.
Indeed, the British media recalls that farmers in the region notably used algae to fertilize their land. However, now they can no longer use those of Loch Long for the simple reason that thousands of waste mix with them.
How to remedy this problem?
To prevent waste from coming back ever from year to year, only one solution is mentioned by the Marine Conservation Society : that of preventing waste from entering the Loch Long.
It's simple and yet so complicated. Indeed, for this to happen, a solution has been being studied for some time: the implementation of an instruction system for drinks containers (bottles and cans). A solution approved by the Scottish government.
However, this blocks at the level of the United Kingdom. Indeed, in the highest officers, Scotland would do too much by asking for the set of plastic and glass containers. Thus, for the moment everything is blocked until 2027 when a plan in accordance with the different parties should see the light of day.
This therefore corresponds to more than 120,000 waste which will have failed on the banks of the Loch Long so far.
