2024’s Animal Kingdom Highlights: A Patagonian Sea Lion, Three Adorable Red Panda Cubs, and a Baby Marmoset

A beautiful baby, and a beautiful animal, but also a real victory for the European Breeding Program for this species. “This year, only 4 maned sea lions were born in European zoos,” the Paris zoo had clarified in an Instagram post.

A pink flamingo on the Isle of Mans

The Siberian tiger is native to Russia and northern China where it is considered a sacred animal. It came close to complete extinction between 1930 and 1940.

It is neither one, nor two, but three little red pandas who were born on August 10, 2024, at the Lincoln Children's Zoo, in Nebraska (USA). An exceptional birth due to the rarity of red pandas, but also due to the number of babies present in the litter.

A critically endangered Persian Evening Primrose cub has been born at Chester Zoo. Named Jasper, he is part of the most endangered equine family in the world. Currently, there are 600 individuals left in the wild. Their population has been decimated due in particular to poaching, drought, etc.

The largest tapir species in the world at a zoo in Miami

For the first time in 18 years, a Malaysian tapir, also called an Asian tapir, has been born at a Miami zoo. Threatened by deforestation, it is classified by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as an endangered species. This species of tapir is the largest in the world. The little tapir also weighed 8.4 kg at birth.

A small animal but big news for the species

The pygmy marmoset, also called dwarf marmoset or marmoset, can fit in the palm of the hand when adult. So just imagine the size of a baby pygmy marmoset. In August 2024, at Dursillas Park, a wildlife park in Sussex near Alfriston (England), teams discovered a tiny ball of fur perched on the back of Rosie, a female marmoset.
